Special Operations Minifigures: Green Berets, Rangers & More

Comparing special operations minifigure sets, from desert and modern camo squads to SWAT and air operations, with prices and what each is best for.

Special operations figures are the most popular corner of military minifigures, and also the easiest to buy badly. Generic "special forces" listings often mean nothing more than a camo figure with a rifle. This guide compares the special operations style sets in our range, what separates them, and which suits which kind of build.

The short answer

For a general modern squad, buy the Modern Military 12-figure set at $24.99. For desert scenes, choose the Desert Special Forces set at $29.99. For urban and tactical entry scenes, the SWAT Police Mega Set at $33.99 offers the most variety. For something unusual, the Military Pilot Airborne Set at $29.99 adds a drone and robot dogs.

What makes a minifigure "special operations"

Real units differ, but on a shelf the look comes down to a few things: mixed camouflage, modern helmets and headsets, body armor and pouches, and a wider range of gear than a standard infantry pack. A good set shows variety in loadout, not twelve copies of the same soldier. Where a listing mentions a famous unit by name, treat it as styling inspiration unless the product page says otherwise.

Value per figure

The SWAT Mega Set is the cheapest per figure of the four: $33.99 for 20 is about $1.70 each. The Modern Military set is about $2.08 each ($24.99 for 12). The Desert and Airborne sets are about $2.50 each ($29.99 for 12), though the Airborne price also covers a drone and two robot dogs. Cheapest is not best if the figures do not suit your scene, but if you want a large team on a budget, the Mega Set is the answer.

Matching the set to the scene

  • Desert compound or convoy: the Desert Special Forces set, plus vehicles from vehicles.
  • City or building entry: the SWAT Mega Set. The shields change how a scene is posed.
  • Open-field or forest patrol: the Modern Military set.
  • Air support or rescue: the Airborne set, with pieces from aircraft.

Building a believable team

Real teams are small. Six to eight figures usually looks right, with a clear mix of roles: point, support gunner, radio, medic, leader. Spread the loadouts rather than giving everyone the same weapon. If the scene is a full diorama, how to build a military diorama covers composition, and building the ultimate tactical scene covers entry scenes.

Combining two sets

Two sets from the same environment make a convincing larger force. Modern Military plus Desert Special Forces is $54.98 for 24 figures, and the camo contrast reads as two teams working one operation. Avoid pairing the Mega Set with a desert scene unless you want a police presence in it. Match the figures to the setting first, then the price.

Before you buy: a short checklist

  • Which environment are you building: desert, urban, forest or air?
  • Does the set repeat figures or give each one a different print?
  • Are shields, drones or animals included, and do they fit your scene?
  • Do you want one big set or two smaller sets from the same theme?
