How to Weather Minifigures for a Battle-Worn Look

Weathering turns a clean, factory-fresh minifigure into a battle-hardened veteran caked in dust, grime, and damage. It's one of the most satisfying customization techniques — and one of the easiest to learn. Here's how to give your figures a realistic war-torn look.

Start With a Wash

A thin, dark wash flows into the recesses of a figure, instantly adding depth and grime. Apply it, then wipe the excess off the raised areas with a cloth so only the crevices stay dark.

Washes and dry-brushing give historical figures a convincing battle-worn finish.

Dry-Brush the Highlights

Load a near-dry brush with a lighter color and lightly drag it across edges and details. This catches the raised surfaces and simulates wear, scuffs, and dust on gear and uniforms.

Add Mud, Dust, and Damage

Stipple earth tones around the boots for mud, dust the lower body with pigment powders, and add tiny scratches or scorch marks with a fine brush. Less is more — build it up gradually.
