How to Photograph Minifigures Like a Pro

Great minifigure photography can make a one-inch figure look like a movie still. With a few techniques — and no expensive gear — you can shoot scroll-stopping shots of your collection. Here's how.

Lighting Is Everything

Soft, directional light is your friend. A window or a cheap LED panel diffused through paper gives clean, even light. Avoid harsh overhead light, which flattens detail and casts ugly shadows.

Get Low and Close

Shoot at the figure's eye level to make it feel life-sized and heroic. Get as close as your lens or phone will focus, and use a small aperture (or your phone's portrait mode) to control depth of field.

Build a Simple Scene

A bit of terrain, a printed backdrop, and a prop or two add story and scale. A spray of water or a puff of cotton for smoke takes a shot to the next level.
